Prayer Room Dedication at St. Elizabeth

Prayer Room KubalaOn Monday, March 26, the beginning of Holy Week, a dedication was held for the newly renovated Prayer Room, located on the third floor of the Outpatient Pavilion.

A Crucifix, special ordered from Italy, now sets atop a stone modeled after the Golgotha, a site immediately outside Jerusalem’s walls where Jesus was crucified.  On either side of the Crucifix are stained glass windows, which were left behind in the Phelan Mansion and kept in good condition by the nuns. The stained glass windows have been restored, mounted, and up lit.

This beautiful work was made possible through the generosity of Dr. Mark Kubala, a devoted Catholic, a long-time neurosurgeon with Golden Triangle Neurocare, a dedicated supporter of the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Foundation, and most recently a published author (The Execution of Jesus the Christ).

Dr. Kubala made a generous donation to the Foundation to purchase the crucifix, as he wanted the Prayer Room to be more representative of a Catholic facility.

Prayer RoomMary Williams, granddaughter of John Henry “Harry” and Johannah Phelan, spoke of the importance of the Catholic faith to her grandparents, the emphasis placed on faith during her upbringing, and stories of her childhood.

Bishop Guillory gave the dedication and Tommy Frank, Foundation Board Chairman, gave a special reading. The event culminated with words from Dr. Kubala.

“We are so grateful that patients have a beautiful, peaceful place available to pray for loved ones undergoing treatment in the hospital,” said Foundation President Ivy Pate.  “Thank you, Dr. Kubala, for your immense generosity. Your dedication to this project is awe-inspiring.”

The Prayer Room is open to people of all faiths and denominations. It is a place of peace and calm where all patients, families, and staff are welcome.

Community Sends Valentines to Pediatric Patients

Valentine’s Day is a time to feel special – a time to feel loved. But each year, children in the hospital are forced to spend it away from their friends and fun classroom festivities due to injury or illness. This February, we asked our community to help us make sure the flu and other illnesses didn’t keep kids in the hospital from experiencing the excitement of receiving valentines.

“Spread some love this Valentine’s Day by sending a special valentine to a pediatric patient at your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth. Fill out the form online, select your favorite card, and we will deliver your card to a patient. It’s fast, free and sure to brighten a child’s day!”

Valentines from CommunityOn Valentine’s Day, we had an abundance of valentines to deliver to our pediatric patients. Thanks to our community (and beyond), our youngest patients felt loved as they each received dozens of valentines and well wishes. Your special messages brought smiles to the faces of children who missed class parties and fun with friends because they were in the hospital on Valentine’s Day. Thank you for helping make miracles happen for kids in Southeast Texas!

Entertainment for Waiting Room

Touch2Play KidAt CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth, the Emergency Department alone sees 8,500 pediatric patients a year. Currently, the waiting room caters to adults without any toys or entertainment for children. The Emergency Department wants to better serve the pediatric population and their families by offering a form of entertainment in the waiting room that will distract, calm, and educate. Thanks to a grant from Child’s Play, the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Foundation is now able to provide that entertainment.

Two Touch2Play Pro touchscreen game systems will be installed in the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth Emergency Department waiting room this spring.

Many times, Emergency Department wait times can be long and anxiety filled. The Touch2Play systems will help offer comfort and normalcy in an unfamiliar environment. Each game system has the capability of accessing only the websites that the staff deems safe and appropriate. It is the perfect gaming system for all ages, from toddler to teen, offering 40 family-related games with none of the violence sometimes associated with video games.

Panda Bed Warmers for St. Elizabeth

Panda WarmerThe CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Foundation is excited to announce that we have provided five Panda Bed Warmers for the Center for New Life at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth, thanks to the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation. These Panda Bed Warmers will help fulfill the ultimate goal of equipping each of the 19 labor and delivery rooms with an infant warmer, as they are required to be in each room for delivery. Until now, the Center for New Life only had four outdated warmers.

St. Elizabeth’s Center for New Life is beginning to see an increase in patients due to the new CHRISTUS Women’s Center, which sends patients to St. Elizabeth to deliver. This patient overflow is intensifying the already urgent need for additional warmers.

Newborns in respiratory distress must be immediately and expertly handled. The warmers are all-in-one stabilization equipment, complete with warming devices and resuscitation devices. Benefits of the warmers include innovative recessed heating, which keeps babies warm while keeping nurses cool; integrated in-bed scale, which makes weighing babies quick and easy; and equipment for resuscitation therapy. The warmers are compact, streamlined, easy to maneuver, and user friendly, which makes them ideal for a high risk and high stress delivery room resuscitation.

Panda Warmer with Clinical StaffThe warmers allow for immediate care for sick newborns with integrated resuscitation available and minimal setup for high-risk deliveries. The warmers also offer easy patient monitoring with integrated, full-color displays that help track the infant’s temperature, weight, oxygen levels, and pulse rate. The compact size allows more room for the nurse, the patient, and the family to interact with the infant.

The warmers are primarily used for two reasons: resuscitation and stimulation. Last year alone, 300 newborns at the Center for New Life needed resuscitation. The resuscitation devices are available to all of the 2,000+ deliveries each year at St. Elizabeth and provide lifesaving resuscitation therapy in times of emergency. Resuscitation devices include a blender to provide blended oxygen to the infant; a pulse oximeter, which measures the oxygen saturation of the infants; and a NeoPuff, which helps to control lung volume, a widely recognized standard in resuscitation devices for newborn resuscitation.

In order to adhere to the highest standards of care, we must provide a warmer in each labor and delivery room. These warmers are the safest place for nurses to provide resuscitation and warmth.

If a newborn’s temperature drops, it may cause issues with respiration and blood sugar. If the infant is not able to receive immediate warming procedures, it increases the chances of the infant being admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, increasing costs for the family, decreasing health outcomes for the infant, and interfering with family bonding. The warmers will increase the chance of the infant staying in the room if there is a minor emergency that can be remedied with the warmer.

CHRISTUS has newly implemented skin to skin contact post birth to make the transition from fetal to newborn life easier. For normal births, this skin to skin time is possible. But for many high-risk births and emergency births, skin to skin is not possible; and for these emergency births, the best option is the warmers, which provide all body temperature, blood glucose, heart rate, and resuscitation support. Our greatest thanks go to the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation for helping us remain highly prepared with state-of-the-art equipment in times of emergency.

Foundation Funds 3D Mammography for Mid County

Susie Roebuck 3D Mammography OpeningThe CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Foundation is proud to announce that, after raising funds through local foundations and local individual philanthropists, we have purchased a 3D mammography system for the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Outpatient Center Mid County. Thank you to Mike Roebuck and family, the Mildred Yount Manion Charitable Foundation, the Mamie McFaddin-Ward Heritage Foundation, and each of our private donors for allowing us to bring cutting-edge technology to our Mid County – specifically Port Arthur – residents in a spa-like, outpatient setting.

The new Women’s Center has been named the Susie Roebuck Mammography Center as a loving tribute from Mike Roebuck to his mother. “This will be a timeless memorial to Mike’s mother and to the bond that they shared,” said Ivy Pate, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Foundation President. “Her memory will live on in the life-saving services that will be provided year after year to the women in Mid County.” The center’s primary objective is to increase early cancer detection and early intervention to save lives of patients utilizing Hologic’s Genius 3D Mammography system with biopsy capabilities.

The CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Foundation is proud to offer CHRISTUS patients in Mid County – mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts – access to the highest level of efficiency and accuracy in breast cancer prevention and treatment.
